Residency Training in Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery

SALARY, BENEFITS, AND MISCELLANEA

Appointments

To facilitate regular rotations, each resident has simultaneous appointments as a house officer at both University Medical Center and St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center. In addition, each resident receives an academic appointment as Clinical Assistant Instructor of Surgery in the School of Medicine at Stony Brook.

Annual Salaries

The stipends for surgical residents, as of July 1, 2007, are:

PGY-1 = $49,293

PGY-2 = $52,578

PGY-3 = $55,580

PGY-4 = $58,584

PGY-5 = $61,584

PGY-6 = $64,583

PGY-7 = $71,294

NB:  These stipends reflect a "cost of living allowance" of $2,500. They also are subject to annual increases, pending United University Professions (UUP) agreements. The chief resident bonus is a prorated $1,000 amount split by all chief residents.

Vacation Policy

Three weeks of vacation time are allowed each year.

Insurance

Health insurance and life insurance are available. Malpractice coverage is included in the residency program.

Meetings

Traditionally, each chief resident attends one surgical meeting, for which expenses are reimbursed by the Department of Surgery. If any resident is presenting a paper at a meeting, the Department often covers all expenses.

Housing

Residents are responsible for obtaining their own housing with assistance given by the Department. A limited number of apartments are available on a first-come-first-served basis through each of the two hospitals in our program. Residents are given an on-call room at both hospitals.

On-Call Schedule

The on-call schedule varies between the two teaching hospitals, but, in general, each resident can expect to be on call every third night. The chief resident is on call at all times for his/her patients.
