General Objectives

1. To understand pathophysiology of pediatric surgical illnesses, including pediatric traumatic injuries.
2. To identify and make diagnosis of pediatric surgical illnesses, including pediatric traumatic injuries.
3. To develop medical and perioperative management strategies for pediatric surgical illnesses, including pediatric traumatic injuries.
4. To supervise and teach medical students on the service.

Goals Specific to PGY-1

1. To perform admitting history and physical exam on all inpatients
2. To document daily progress report on all inpatients
3. To identify and make diagnosis of pediatric surgical illnesses
4. To develop medical management and perioperative strategies for pediatric surgical illnesses
5. To communicate issues with pediatric surgical attendings
6. To communicate with consulting general pediatric and pediatric subspecialty services
7. To communicate with nursing staff regarding medical and social issues of patients
8. To communicate with parents and guardian of patients
9. To first-assist or second-assist on operations, both inpatient and ambulatory cases as dictated by the type of operation
10. To participate in outpatient clinics for preoperative evaluation and postoperative follow-up
11. To participate in weekly divisional pediatric surgical conference
12. To maintain his or her personal operative log
13. To supervise and teach medical students on the service

Goals Specific to PGY-4

1. To supervise and assist PGY-1 in admitting history and physical exam on all inpatients and emergency admission
2. To supervise and assist PGY-1 in the daily documentation progress report on all inpatients
3. To supervise and assist PGY-1 in the diagnosis of pediatric surgical illnesses
4. To supervise and assist PGY-1 in medical management and perioperative strategies for pediatric surgical illnesses
5. To communicate issues with pediatric surgical attendings
6. To communicate with consulting general pediatric and pediatric subspecialty services
7. To communicate with nursing staff regarding medical and social issues regarding patients
8. To communicate with parents and guardian of patients on service
9. To first-assist on operations, both inpatient and ambulatory cases
10. To participate in outpatient clinics for preoperative evaluation and postoperative follow-up
11. Preparation and presentation of weekly general surgery morbidity and mortality conferences
12. To organize weekly divisional pediatric surgical conference
13. To organize weekly operative activity (log)
14. To supervise and teach medical students on the service
