The present essay was originally published in 1989 in The American Voice, and was subsequently revised and published in 1998 in A Woman's Gaze: Latin American Women Artists (White Pine Press).

In 1951, dance critic Walter Sorell published an anthology of essays on the dance, including one by Waldeen; the book's title, The Dance Has Many Faces, came about through long discussions he had had with her.
