Winter 1999         Volume 3 Issue 1

A Message From
Dr. Waltzer

As the Di rector of Transplantation Services at University Hospital and Medical Center at Stony Brook, I am pleased to present to you this latest issue of our Transplant News.

Last year was a very busy one for the staff at our center.  Indeed, we did a record number of transplants in 1998.  For the first time in our history we transplanted over 50 kidneys, actually we were able to transplant 56 kidneys to patients on our waiting list.  This makes Stony Brook one of the leading transplant cente rs in our region, and we continue to grow.

It is our intention to continue to grow and to continue to provide the highest quality of services to our clients.  Most of you reading this may have had some contact with our Transplant Coordinators assigned to your centers.  Interestingly we are the only center in the region that provides Transplant Coordinators to meet with dialysis patients in the centers to answer questions regarding kidney transplants and our programs here at University Hos pital and Medical Center.

If you have not already taken advantage of meeting the Coordinator, just ask the dialysis staff to contact them for you and the Coordinator will make arrange

ments to meet with you at your convenience.

We also offer the opportunity  for you to participate in a small-group  workshop.  These workshops are designed to enable you to come to UHMC and in one day get most of the needed information and paperwork (sometimes even the tests) needed to be activated to the transplant waiting list.  This type of small-group workshop gives you the opportunity to meet with our team of t ransplant specialist right here at the transplant center.  You will also meet with our team social worker and get a one-on-one interview with the Transplant Surgeon.

If however, you are uncomfortable with meeting in a group, for whateve r reason, the Transplant Coordinator assigned to your dialysis center will work with you in setting up a meeting at a different time.

I hope you will take advantage of the only transplant program on Long Island,  for quality care in your own b ackyard.
