SURGICAL SELECTIVES: SURGICAL ONCOLOGY

Objectives

To broaden the student's understanding of surgical oncology with a particular focus on cancers of the gastrointestinal tract and the breast. During this 2-week rotation, 1 week will be devoted to gastric tumors and 1 week will be devoted to breast cancer.

Gastric Tumors

During the surgical oncology rotation, the student will be expected to participate in the inpatient care and out patient evaluation of patients with gastrointestinal malignancies.

The educational goals for the rotation are as follows:

1. To gain a solid understanding of the known etiologies and risk factors for developing a malignancy in the GI tract.
2. Understand the TNM staging of GI cancers and the evaluation process to obtain clinical and pathologic staging.
3. Understand the standard of care for treating all stages of these diseases.
4. To have a working understanding of the common operations used to treat GI malignancies.

Breast Cancer

During the week devoted to breast cancer, the student will have intraoperative experience and outpatient exposure as well.

At the end of the week devoted to breast cancer, the student should:

1. Be able to discuss breast cancer screening guidelines.
2. Have an understanding of mammograms and sonograms.
3. Be able to discuss different breast biopsy options.
4. Be able to outline surgical options for patients with breast cancer.
5. Be able to briefly outline the multidisciplinary approach to breast cancer.
