SURGICAL SELECTIVES: HEAD AND NECK ONCOLOGY

Objectives

To learn the basics of head and neck oncology.

Curriculum

The student rotates in the Division of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery with Dr. Shindo (or Dr. Samara in her absence).

Schedule and What Is Expected of the Student

The student is expected to meet with the otolaryngology chief resident by 7:00 AM on the first day of the rotation. The student must page the ENT resident on call to find out where and what time to meet. The chief resident will assign the student his/her duties for the day. The student must check with Dr. Shindo (or the chief resident if Dr. Shindo is not available) at the end of the day prior to leaving the hospital. The student is expected to pick up at least one inpatient each day and actively participate the the care of that patient (write notes, check labs, change dressings, etc.) and know everything about the patient(s) he/she is following. The student is expected to see patients under the supervision of the attending and/or residents when in clinic. The student is expected to scrub in surgical cases with Dr. Shindo.

Didactics

The student will be given a lecture on evaluation of neck masses and one lecture on management of thyroid nodules and cancers.

Grading

The student will be graded on attendance, enthusiasm, work ethics and basic fund of knowledge.
