Medical Student Education in General Surgery

SURGICAL SELECTIVES: OTOLARYNGOLOGY–HEAD AND NECK SURGERY (ENT)

Objectives

At the end of the course the students should be able to perform a complete history and head and neck exam. They should be able to diagnose and treat common disorders of the head and neck including but not limited to acute and chronic sinusitis, adenotonsillar hypertrophy, chronic tonsillitis, acute and chronic otitis media, recognize sensorineural hearing loss, recognize conductive hearing loss, and understand the differential diagnoses of each, understand management of the thyroid nodule, and understand the management of a neck mass.

Grading

Students evaluations will be based on clinical performance during rounds, in the operating room and during their interactions with residents and attendings in clinic.

Weekly Schedule

Monday: OR at SUNY
Tuesday: Outpatient clinic at SUNY
Wednesday: OR at VAMC Northport
Thursday: OR at SUNY
Friday: Outpatient clinic at VAMC Northport

Instruction to the Student

The student should contact Dr. Samara or the chief resident in otolaryngology by page on the first morning of the rotation. Depending on the size of the service, the first meeting place may be on the floor or in the operating room. Students will be given their respective assignments during their first day.
