Prerequisite

Third-year surgical clerkship in general surgery.

Objectives

To encourage students interested choosing a career in surgery or oncology, expand knowledge base in surgical management of malignancies as well as colorectal diseases, provide broad exposure to operative technique and an opportunity to develop technical skills. Upon completion, students are able to function at a more advanced level on the surgical floors and in the operating room as well as discuss and describe surgical options for treatment of various cancer.

Course Description

This clerkship rotation provides a greater in-depth experience in the management of patients with a wide spectrum of surgical oncologic and colorectal problems. Students will participate in both clinical and educational activities of the general surgery service including rounds, conferences, surgeries and office hours with surgical oncologist as well as colon and rectal surgeons. The students learn pre- and post-operative management of surgical patients and participate in the operating room assisting surgeons, to expose and train in various surgical techniques and learn to problem solve surgical issues in these patients. They will also participate in the multidisciplinary weekly tumor conference. Opportunity is also available to learn laparoscopic skills as well as assist in colonoscopies. Interested students will be afforded the opportunity to spend one half a day a week in the office of practicing surgeons in the community in these specialties. Clinical research opportunities are also available. Final evaluation is based on your day to day performance evaluated by the attending surgeons, surgical house staff and your performance on an oral presentation on a surgical topic of your interest.

Availability

All year, housing provided. Night call every 4th night.

Two students per rotation period.
