McLARTY JOINS CARDIOTHORACIC FACULTY

On July 1, 1997, Allison J. McLarty, MD, joined the faculty as an assistant professor of surgery in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Dr. McLarty comes to Stony Brook from the Mayo Clinic. She received her MD from Columbia University in 1988, and completed her residency training in general surgery at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in 1994.
During the period of her residency, she spent a year as a research fellow at the Mayo Clinic, evaluating functional changes in the transplanted heart and lung following transplantation. She subsequently returned to the Mayo Clinic, and in 1997 completed a three-year clinical fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery.
Dr. McLarty's clinical practice encompasses general thoracic surgery and adult cardiac surgery. Areas of particular interest include minimally invasive surgery, mitral valve repair, and the new surgical treatment for arrythmias called the "maze" procedure.
Her research has investigated growth of the mitral annulus after valve replacement in infancy and quality of life in long-term survivors after esophageal resection. Current areas of interest include the optimization of ICU and total length of stay after adult cardiac surgery.
