New Information

Wireless Internet Cards (aka Wireless NIC) are now available in the HSC-Library for temporary loan. These will allow for wireless internet access from your laptop computer in either the library, student lounge, or path labs. Directions and cards are available at the circulation desk.

Web E-mail accounts are provided for all medical students. ALL mail from the school of medicine will be directed to these accounts for all students. Since the new E-mail system is a web based system similar to Hotmail or Yahoo Mail accounts, you can access it from anywhere that is web-connected by typing in the url https://mail.hsc.sunysb.edu. The link can also be found in the QuickLinks sections of the Home Page of this website.

TIPS for using your E-Mail: It is not recommended to try to access your account as a POP server from Yahoo or Hotmail. For one, thing, the new server is IMAP not POP, which is why the mail stays on it and is accessible from anywhere. Since you are already connected to the web while using hotmail, it is really very easy to bookmark the account url and just check your mail directly.

If you must use Hotmail, Yahoo etc only, them log in to your mail.hsc account and set forwarding to your outside account. If you decide to do that, be aware of a couple of points:

  1. all messages will be kept on mail.hsc anyway even when a copy is forwarded elsewhere. So you should log in occasionally and delete or file messages as appropriate.
  2. hotmail or yahoo etc. accounts may not deliver important mail to you for one reason or another. Your spam control, for example, may eliminate messages sent to your whole class by the dean's office or you may get so much mail that you exceed your quota. Of course, if either of these happen, you can always find the messages by logging in to your account directly!

C-Base, is where faculty and administration look for contact information for you as well as being the channel for dissemination of information regarding class schedules, grades and evaulations. An updated link can be found on the Academic Resources page.
Make sure you keep your address, telephone number, EMail address etc up to date.

Student Computer Consultants

There are several students who have volunteered to serve as the primary computer support for the medical students. You are encouraged to contact these individuals with any computer related problems you may run into:

Connecting your computer from home:

Dial-up access for HSC students is provided through main campus. In order to connect your computer to the network this way, you must first obtain an IC (Instructional Computing) account on the Sparky server. This can be done in the HSC Library Computer Lab by asking one of the attendants to help you. After this has been achieved, you should look at the following websites to learn how to connect:
Network Services Dial-up Basic Information
Configuring your computer for PPP (remote network access)
Using McGill TCP3270 to access UHIS
