Procedural Skills and Numbers (ASGE Guidelines)
Endoscopic
competence is difficult to define and quantitate and
the evaluation remains largely subjective. The program will
provide regular on-going feedback concerning endoscopic skills
in a formal setting as with non-endoscopic components of gastroenterology
training. The threshold numbers for assessing competence
has been published by the American Society for Gastrointestinal
Endoscopy are reproduced on the following page. The fellows
will use computer records to document completion of the required numbers.
It should be noted that the required numbers represent the threshold
number of procedures that must be performed before competency can be
assessed. The number represents a minimum and it is understood that
most trainees will require more than the stated number. For many procedures,
it is also understood that it is not the number of procedures that have
been performed but the quality and successful completion of the procedure
that should be assessed. Therefore, special assessment methods will be
done for advanced procedures (ERCP) and these are included in the following
pages.
