Faculty: Jack Coulehan, MD, MPH, Professor, Leslie Hyman, PhD, Associate Professor, Erin O'Leary, PhD, Research Assistant Professor
The Epidemiology Tutorial is conducted each fall by Department of Preventive Medicine faculty to introduce Preventive Medicine residents to basic epidemiologic concepts, methods, and topics and to provide them with skills to critically evaluate published literature and interpret descriptive data. This is achieved by:
The tutorial sessions provide an introduction to topics that will be covered in Introduction to Preventive Medicine course in order to assist the residents in co-leading seminars on these topics. In addition to lectures and textbook readings, recently published and classic articles are used as a vehicle to teach important elements of study design and analysis. These sessions also involve learning how to critically evaluate published articles on topics of current public health significance using the skills developed in during the course. The content of these sessions include the core curriculum areas outlines by the American College of Preventive Medicine.
There will be an examination that coincides with the termination of the medical student course. In addition, the final session will involve each resident presenting an article for critical evaluation.
Residents, Fellows and Faculty from other departments may participate in this course with the permission of the Tutorial Director. For further information about this Tutorial contact Dr. Elinor Schoenfeld, Epidemiology Tutorial Director at eschoenfeld@notes.cc.sunysb.edu or 631-444-2142.
