DEPARTMENT OF ORTHOPAEDICS
ASSESSING THE GENERAL MEDICAL COMPETENCIES The Department of Orthopaedics faculty and residents at Stony Brook University Hospital and the affiliating hospitals have received lectures from the Program Director utilizing the AGCME information of the core competencies. The ACGME web site provides a useful introductory lecture entitled: "ACGME Outcome Project (Enhancing Residency Education Through Outcomes Assessment)". In addition, tools to teach and evaluate the competencies have been introduced into the program at all levels: To view, print or download these assessment tools pick the appropriate button at each line. Of course items like the "Orthopaedic In-Training Exam" are not available at this web site but copies of all the tools we have made or modified from other sources are available. Our departmental RRC Committee, the faculty, and the Program Director have used the results of these new tools to improve residents' assessment. Through our Comprehensive Evaluation Form (report card), the departmental RRC Committee and Program Director evaluate the data provided by these new assessment tools, and use these data as the basis for a triennial report on each resident's performance and overall status. The resident report card tells the resident whether s/he is in good standing, her/his overall grade is on warning or probation, or if dismissal procedures are proceding.
