 |
The Department of Medicine welcomes your interest in postgraduate training at Stony Brook.
The Training Program
Stony Brook's fully accredited residency training program offers a
The Internal Medicine Residency Program at Stony Brook aims to educate compassionate, knowledgeable internists by training in up-to-date medicine and life-long learning skills.
|
The Primary Care and Categorical tracks differ primarily in the amount of time spent in ambulatory care. Both include teaching of the new skills needed by the internists of the next century - clinical reasoning, decision analysis, critical appraisal of the literature, cost-effective patient management, and patient and team management skills.
The Department of Medicine has a commitment to excellence in research, education and clinical care; opportunities for research continue to grow. We promote a scholarly atmosphere exemplified by our three-year average Internal Medicine board pass rate of 90%; we also require each graduating resident to complete a significant academic project.

Two special components of our program are the closed faculty system and our ambulatory experience. The closed faculty system ensures that one attending is responsible for all patient care, and all educational experiences. As an inpatient team resident you will only have to contact one attending for any patient care concerns. This enables teaching discussion to flow from pathophysiology directly into management planning. Our ambulatory experience emphasizes preventive medicine and women's health with strong continuity at two sites.
As educators, we are excited about the new emphasis on primary care and take pride in the fact that we graduate approximately one-half of our residents into primary care. The other half enter into a variety of subspecialties. Many of our graduates opt to join the practice community, while others continue to pursue academic and research careers.
We are proud of our program and the flexibility it offers and welcome applications through ERAS from highly motivated individuals. If you have questions please E-Mail us or call (631) 444-8044.

Our Strengths That Help Us Help You

- Program directors and chief residents dedicated and determined to provide a strong intellectual program in a nurturing environment, with the attention you need as an individual to meet your specific goals
These three groups of people interact and combine to provide a supportive and collegial atmosphere in which residents, students and faculty are eager and able to teach each other.
- Two excellent teaching hospitals, with differing and complementary patient populations and supervisory systems
- Location on a major research university campus
- A very pleasant suburban setting, with good recreational options and access to but no intrusion by the city.
Marks Of Excellence
- Received a 4-year accreditation cycle with commendations from the RRC
- Closed faculty system with one attending responsible not only for all patient care, but also for all educational experiences for each team; as an inpatient team resident you will only have to contact one attending for any patient care concerns; enables teaching discussion to flow from pathophysiology directly into management planning.
- Excellent results in getting residents into nationally acclaimed fellowship programs
- Primary care track achieved "upweighted" status on first application to NY State
Specific Points Regarding The VAMC
- The primary care firm system, which provides continuity of care for patients by having patients, attendings and residents all divided up into three firms through which inpatient and outpatient care is given; has resulted in decreased ER visits, decreased inpatient census, and markedly increased patient and physician satisfaction. Has won national recognition with the VA system and outside of it.
- A system of relative independence in which the residents are identified by the patients as the doctors in charge, both in the inpatient and the outpatient setting, thus providing a chance to really direct the care, under supervision
- A highly popular Skills month, which is combined with outpatient Gyn at Planned Parenthood
- A primary care continuity clinic facility, with rooms for special primary care services such as stress testing, flex sigs, etc.
