State University of New York at Stony Brook

Internal Medicine Residency Program

Department of Veterans Affairs
Medical Center at Northport

The Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) Medical Center at Northport is a comprehensive care facility where the academic chairman directs the clinical services under the supervision of the dean of the medical school. The DVA Medical Center maintains strong ties with Stony Brook University Hospital, including complete integration of the residency programs. Faculty and house staff are appointed jointly through the medical school to Stony Brook University Hospital and the DVA Medical Center.

The DVA Medical Center at Northport is a major primary and secondary care facility, serving the largest regional veteran population in the United States. The inpatient services consist of 80 acute-care general medicine beds, a coronary care unit, and a medical intensive care unit. Subspecialty care in all areas of internal medicine is carried out by full-time faculty on site at the DVA Medical Center, which has received national attention for its innovative integration inpatient and ambulatory care into four primary care firms, so that in both settings, patients experience continuity in care from residents and attendings. There are 28,000 patients enrolled in the three primary care firms, generating 40,000 ambulatory visits per year, while the medical specialty clinics accommodate 30,000 visits per year. A new ultra-modern ambulatory care pavilion opened in early 1996.

The combination of an emphasis on tertiary care at Stony Brook University Hospital and primary care at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center offers an outstanding and balanced patient care and educational program. Special attention is given to emerging issues in ambulatory care management.

Located on a 400-acre site, the DVA Medical Center has major recreational facilities available to house staff, including a golf course, tennis courts, a swimming pool and a gymnasium.
