01.19.99 - Careers in Industry. A Discussion with Jim Hayward (CEO Collaborative BioAlliance Inc.) and Anil Dhundale (Center for Biotechnology SUNY Stony Brook)

11.23.98 - 2nd BIOSCIENCE POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATION MEETING

Held at 1 pm on November 23 in 038 of the Life Sciences Bldg; attended by
about 15 postdocs.

Meeting Agenda: To discuss the progress being made on the following issues:

1. Sponsored Seminars
2. Other Association Activities
3. Informational Presentation on health insurance benefits for fellows

The results are as follows:

1. SPONSORED SEMINARS:

A. Career Placement Center Workshop-

Holly Miller is organizing a career placement center workshop. This
workshop was scheduled for November but will now occur probably in early
December, perhaps December 7th. We will have someone from the career
center discuss career options, preparing resumes/cvs, and perhaps
interviewing skills. Holly asked for input from the postdocs who attended
last weeks workshop given by the career center . Suggestions included
making our workshop more appropriate to postdocs and for people in the
biological sciences. If anyone on the list attended the workshop sponsored
by the grad students on alternate careers/cvs and resumes please give Holly
your feedback.

B. Panel Discussion with SUNY Search Committees

Jose Carrodegas is organizing this panel. Four faculty from various depts.
who have been on search committees are willing to speak to us about what
makes a good faculty candidate. This will be held probably in the second
week of December in the late afternoon. However, it was noted that this
timing may be a problem for people attending a Cell Biology Meeting.
Please give Holly or Jose an e-mail if this poses a problem so that perhaps
this event can be scheduled around the meeting.

C. :Panel Discussion with Scientists from Local Industries:

Debbie Black is organizing this panel.. Anil Dhundale, the head of the
campus Biotechnology Program, and Jim Hayward, the CEO of Collaborative
BioAlliance Inc. have agreed to speak to us about their experiences in
industry. This seminar will be held in a conference room at Collaborative
BioAlliance across the street in the Incubator, and wine and cheese will
be provided. The proposed date for this event is Thursday, January 21
around 5 pM. Please let Debbie know if this date will be a problem for
anyone. Alternative dates are Jan 18 and Jan 19. Debbie will be asking
everyone to RSVP for this event as a head count will be needed.

D Alternative Careers in Science - Science Writing

Holly is still working on arranging this. Please e-mail her if you have
any contacts or ideas.

E. Alternative Careers in Science - Government

Holly has a contact who is the Deputy Director of Biology at NCI. Dr.
Bravo(?) will be willing to speak to us, but no date has yet been set.

2. OTHER ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES:

A. USPDA-L: the list is in working condition thanks to Holly.
This list is open to all interested. Feel free to ask your postdoc
friends (or others who could contribute helpful knowledge) to join the
list.

B. Web Page- Dima Mozzherin is making some progress. Any help or
ideas for our web site would be greatly appreciated.

C. CV Notebook- Kathy Wojtas has collected some CVs and teaching
statements of successful postdocs (those who have landed jobs). These will
be posted on our web site. She would like it if the rest of us could help
her collect CVs/resumes from people we may know who have employment in
academia or industry.

D. Newsletter - Julia Grimes is working on this and will let us know
how it is coming.

E. Postdoc survey- Juan Crosby has a survey (an adaptation of the
UCSF postdoc survey) to be filled out by all the postdocs in our
association. If you did not attend the meeting, please contact Juan about
getting a survey. The deadline for completing the survey (about 64
questions) is Dec 22. The survey is confidential and you will remain
anonymous. The survey will determine the demographics of our
organization and will facilitate our group's efforts to obtain benefits,
etc.

3. Informational Presentation about health benefits for fellows- Lillian
Medina is in charge of this, and she will hopefully let us know of her
progress.

This concludes the minutes. Please e-mail the list with any ideas,
comments, or gripes that you may have. Debbie Black (black@asterix.bio.sunysb.edu)
