Evolution of vertebrate locomotion, primate adaptations, experimental analysis of locomotor movements, functional morphology of the musculoskeletal system, immunocytochemistry of myofibers.

Dr Jouffroy's research focuses on the adaptive responses of vertebrate locomotor systems to environmental constraints, with emphasis on the effect of the gravitational force in postures and locomotion. Her studies cover Amphibians, Reptiles, and Mammals, and especially Primates because of their very wide range of arboreal and terrestrial modes of locomotion.

Data acquisition combines field observations (West Africa) and laboratory experiments of positional behavior (slow motion video, high-speed cineradiography, force plates, and telemetered EMG at SUNY-Stony Brook since 1978) with morphological investigation of bone-muscle-ligament systems (X-ray, tomography, morphometrics, dissection) at the macro- and microscopic levels. Recent research deals with comparative immunocytochemistry of myofibers (using anti-myosin and anti-troponin antibodies) of mammalian (Primates, Rodents) and reptilian (Lizards) limb muscles in relation to locomotor specializations, and their modification in the course of postnatal development.
