Evolution of vertebrate locomotion, primate adaptations, experimental analysis of locomotor movements, functional morphology of the musculoskeletal system, immunocytochemistry of myofibers.
Data acquisition combines field observations (West Africa) and laboratory experiments of positional behavior (slow motion video, high-speed cineradiography, force plates, and telemetered EMG at SUNY-Stony Brook since 1978) with morphological investigation of bone-muscle-ligament systems (X-ray, tomography, morphometrics, dissection) at the macro- and microscopic levels. Recent research deals with comparative immunocytochemistry of myofibers (using anti-myosin and anti-troponin antibodies) of mammalian (Primates, Rodents) and reptilian (Lizards) limb muscles in relation to locomotor specializations, and their modification in the course of postnatal development.
